All the plants survived the frost.  Hooray.

Checked the dried and storage garlic today and found two that have sprouted little green tops.  They will not keep now (the bulbs get mushy) so I planted them out with the winter garlic. This will test whether garlic should be planted in the fall or if it is ok to plant them in spring.

Picked our first pea pods today for the stir-fry for dinner.  Peas plants will climb the fence and produce for a long time and grow to be 12 feet long.  That’s why they are planted by the fence!

Tried the shallots this year, but am very disappointed.  They are plentiful, but soooo small.  It seems to take forever to prepare them for use.  The flavor is good, but so tiny will not plant them again.

I picked the first 2 ears of sweet corn.  The stalk is only 5 feet tall, but the tassel was all brown and dried so I knew it was time.  I squeezed the ear that looked the biggest and oldest and felt for the kernels inside.  When I peeled off the green husk, there it…

Planted green beans  today.  These are seeds from last year’s bounty that I dried and saved.  I did a sprout test and they did 80% ok.  Beans are critical in a long-storage plan and they have many vitamins and minerals.  And, so easy to cook.  Problem is the arrival of the Colorado bean beetle.  I…
