Tomatoes

Found a robin nest in the plum tree today.  There are 4 eggs.

This is my first year trying shallots.  They have just put up their first seed heads, not open yet, but you don’t really want them to blossom.  I will pick the blossoms off so the energy from the roots will maker bigger shallots.  (Shallots are milder on the tummy than onions.)

Planted carrots today. Carrots need to be kept moist.   Covering them with hay or board will keep moisture in,  Plant spacing just as I do with beets.: plant seeds 3 inches apart, in rows 3 inches apart diagonally. That comes to 3 rows in a one-row garden space.  Lots less space for weeds!  Be sure…

The third planting is just starting to poke their heads up. The second planting of beans have grown tall enough to see that the package was mislabeled and unwanted pole beans are growing.  I do not have the capability for pole beans.  I will have to either cut them off at about two feet and…

Tried the shallots this year, but am very disappointed.  They are plentiful, but soooo small.  It seems to take forever to prepare them for use.  The flavor is good, but so tiny will not plant them again.

Saw our first green, round tomato.  It is only the size of a golf ball, but its the first I have seen.  There have been many, many blossoms, so the season looks good.  Saw two more random plants come up.  Don’t know what they are, but the neighbor hopes they are the small sweet minis…
