Sweet potato starts sprouted from last year’s sweet potatoes in the planter in the kitchen. They are now big and strong enough and it is warm enough to set them out in the garden. Each start is planted separately (not the whole old potato like whites). Each day, more dirt is heaped on top. It must stay loose and fluffy for new sweet potatoes to grow underground. Sweet potato leaves are edible, either in a salad or stir-fried.
Remember that little 3 inch baby that came up randomly? Well, it has gotten big. At least 12 inches across. That may sound good, but it is turning orange already. That is bad. It is 2 months early so will probably rot before pumpkin decorating season. Chickens will feast!
Friend with a greenhouse uses 21-gallon totes, drills 4 drainage holes in the sides 3 inches from the bottom: excess water drains out, but a reservoir forms in the bottom so she doesn’t have to water as often. Cool idea. Plants 2 tomatoes in each and ties them up on strings.
The whole chive patch is starting to blossom. They are beautiful light purple fuzz-balls on foot-long edible stems. The blossoms are pretty in salads, and edible, too. The stems and blossoms add a nice, mild flavor to scrambled eggs, egg salad, and omelets, too. I plant these close to the tomato plants to keep tomato…
