For some unknown reason, a sparrow built her nest inside the chicken coop. I have tried blocking them out and destroying early nests, but they somehow succeed in nesting there, Trouble is, when the babies drop out of the nest, the chickens kill them. One fell out today and I was able to rescue it, but not before the chickens broke its wing. It cannot fly. Mom and dad sparrow kept calling. It was so sad.
Had a whopper of a thunderstorm storm last evening. Worst I have seen in a long while. Put the electricity out for hours and into the night. Checked the dried and storage garlic today and found two that have sprouted little green tops. They will not keep now (the bulbs get mushy) so I planted them out with the winter garlic. This will test whether garlic should be planted in the fall or if it is ok to plant them in spring.
Trying two new winter beans given to me by next door neighbor: Goose bean and Fortex bean. Both good-eating heirloom types. Goose is best eaten the day after you cook it. Fortex pods grow 15 inches long!
