I don’t usually post on Sunday, but feel I must say that we are safe from the terrible wind and rain storm we had today.  The wind felt more like a tornado than a thunderstorm.  We could see the cloud line coming — dark and roiling.  Worst I have ever seen.  The wind was horizontal and the horrendous rain like ice picks.  No Hail.  The force of the wind was scarey.  No damage to our home, but the corn which was 3 feet tall is now laid over almost flat.  The electricity went out for a bit and flickered twice, but came back on OK.

Oh, no.  The worst has happened.  Frost tonight!  But I am ready.  Bought a roll of chicken wire.  Unrolled it and folded it in half lengthwise. Wrapped it in floating row cover and tented it over the tomatoes.  Used landscape spikes to hold it down in case of wind.

Snow, as little as we had, is gone and the perennial herbs are poking up! There are 12 clumps of chives, 3 little sprigs of tarragon, 7 tips of mint, and 4 clumps of sage. Mint is great as calming mild tea.  Tarragon chopped fine in scrambled eggs is divine. Sage is wonderful with meat…

Eggplant

Saw the first blossom on the eggplant.  Not the one the mole bothered, but its sister in the row.  This one is three times the size of the injured one and looks like it has lots of blossoms to come.

Beets

Second planting of beets are in.  I am already eating some greens from the first planting.  Weather is perfect for beets…coolish nights and sunny days.  Interplanting with radish helps to find the row before seeds sprout.

Peas

Peas are growing crazy!  I planted both the edible pod and the peas-in-a-pod.  The edible pod grows thin and develops very small, tender pea-ettes.  The peas-in-a-pod develop large peas like you get in a can. I have to split the pod to get them out. The pods are too tough for people, but the hens…
