Naked Gardener Day

Picked our first pea pods today for the stir-fry for dinner.  Peas plants will climb the fence and produce for a long time and grow to be 12 feet long.  That’s why they are planted by the fence!

First plant just poked through today!!

Pulled the last onions tonight to dry them for winter storage.  Good size crop of both white and red.  Some rot from too much rain, but I can’t control the rain.

Oh, no.  The worst has happened.  Frost tonight!  But I am ready.  Bought a roll of chicken wire.  Unrolled it and folded it in half lengthwise. Wrapped it in floating row cover and tented it over the tomatoes.  Used landscape spikes to hold it down in case of wind.

No, I didn’t plant any pumpkins…they just sprouted by themselves and are huge!  They are putting out only male flowers now, just to entice the bees to visit.    The blossoms are edible:  pick the open blossoms, remove the pollen, wash gently with water, fill with stuffing mix, and bake 15 min.  Delicious.

First white potato blossom today.  White potatoes are my staple crop.  They are the most nutritionally-dense of any vegetable and store well over winter in the root  cellar.  Plus, any left over become the seed potato for next year’s crop.  Even shriveled, they grow.  I bake them, boil them, fry them, scallop them, and add…
