Class

Taught a gardening class today.  I concentrated on containers with edibles:  dwarf tomato, lettuce, and cucumber with nasturtiums and chives.  Used 8-gallon plastic terra-cotta pots with drainage holes. Cautioned them to use a saucer under so not to stain patio or porch floor.

oops garlic

Checked the dried and storage garlic today and found two that have sprouted little green tops.  They will not keep now (the bulbs get mushy) so I planted them out with the winter garlic. This will test whether garlic should be planted in the fall or if it is ok to plant them in spring.

The garlic popped their little heads up today.  They were planted last fall about 6 inches apart and covered with lots of mulch.  During the winter they put out roots so they are strong in the spring. Garlic is tasty in so many types of dishes and also roasted.  They will grow about 3 feet…

peas

Yes, i know it’s early, but it’s so sunny and warm I cannot resist the urge to plant.  so, peas went in today.  Planted them along the fence by the driveway to neighbor’s house.  It’s a nice sunny, sheltered spot so they should be fine even if we get a late frost.

shallots

The shallots are just poking their heads up.  They look like grass just now and I must remember not to pull them.  Shallots will be a nice mild substitute for onions and are not so hard to digest.

herbs up

Snow, as little as we had, is gone and the perennial herbs are poking up! There are 12 clumps of chives, 3 little sprigs of tarragon, 7 tips of mint, and 4 clumps of sage. Mint is great as calming mild tea.  Tarragon chopped fine in scrambled eggs is divine. Sage is wonderful with meat…
